here in africa, many people are forced to struggle and starve of hunger and povety. I don't have anything against genuine people with ED's, but I think if all you girls out there think ED's are the coolist new things going, and you've got to catch 1, then you must be sick all right. sick in the head. sorry if i seem too forward.
I may be tanned, I may be black, but hunni, when im looking back, no one ever pushes me around!!

I agree completely. I have friends who genuinely had anorexia nervosa - it is as much a mental problem as it is an eating problem. But then I'll see girls who are bulimic or anorexic because they think its cool.
Its not the anorexics that disgust me so much as the (fake) bulimics who live here - if you take a car ride around Maputo at 21.00, you are going to see kids lying on street corners trying to sleep, and you know that they probably didnt have a decent meal that day, if any at all. I guess I can't really understand how someone could choose to throw away so much food when so many kids are starving just to be cool.

very sad...
I noticed so many young people suffering from eating disorders in my school. I find it very sad, teh way they treat themselves. Why do they do it, I often ask myself? Dnt they love being healthy and being the way they are....
I have read a similar thread on another forum about what people think about eating disorders. I think if we talk to these people like friends and try to understand why they do this we can help them out of this. What do you guys think?

Re: Eating Disorders
Many of you are right. A lot of girls want to or try to have this disease because they think it will make them look 'cool' or like they have 'dicipline'. But I really think that this attitude pertains to other diseases and/or mental disorders as well, such as ADD, Depression, SI, OCD, etc. Some people want to have these difficultes and to be honest, I don't really know why. Maybe they use it as a crutch on life, kind of like a security blanket. Or perhaps they like the impression it gives people.
To girls/guys out there that honestly suffer from ED, stay strong. Recover.

Re: Eating Disorders
Seriously. Many people think eating disorders are a good way to diet. I mean, the best diet possible is really just: No snacks. I mean breakfast, lunch, dinner, and an hours of exercise a day is good enough.

Re: Eating Disorders
Is a eating disorder when you are snacking and binging out of depression without being hungry?

What do you think about anorexia and bulimia? I'm just wondering because people around me don't see it as a disease. I'm always reminded of how sick society is because I'm almost encouraged with my ED. I'll be underweight and it will be obvious that I'm sick but people will still tell me how perfect I look. I'm supposed to be gaining 12 pounds as of right now in order to be a healthy minimun weight.. but I feel that the only people who want that for me is my doctor and parents.
I just found the acceptance of ED's alarming. I thought it was some deep dark thing I must keep hidden at all costs. I had a girl ask me the other day on how to get an eating disorder. I was furious at her. It's a disease. It takes so much out of life...

Mel posted a link to help you, did you look at it?
Eating disorders come under alot of things. By the sounds of it you dont have a perfectly healthy attitude to food, snacking just because you feel down is not a GOOD thing, but I am not sure what it's classified as.
